The History of Mid-Continental Football League in Ohio

MCFL LogoThe Mid-Continental Football League or MCFL is a semi-professional football league that started in 1991. It is part of the American Football Association, which is the national organization of non-professional teams and leagues all over the country. It operates under the supervision of an executive committee, which consists of people from different teams within the league.

The players consist of volunteers and unpaid athletes.  They also have a Board of Directors, which consist of General Managers representing each team. These board members also represent a vote for each of the teams. Regular MCFL seasons last for nine weeks. During this time, every team plays for eight weeks and rests for one. After the end of a season, eight teams prepare for the Championships.

The Championships are held at the home stadium of whichever team has the highest remaining seed at the end of the playoffs. Every Spring, after the championships, the best players from every team meet and participate in the MCFL All-Star game. These chosen players are divided into two teams: Red vs. Blue. This practice, however, is no longer done, since 2006. Instead, the best players in the league play against the best players from the Football League Alliance.

This MCFL started in 1991, with the Cleveland Falcons, the Wyandot Chiefs, the Shenango Valley Blasters, and the Dayton Steelers being the first four teams. The first season was won by the Cleveland Falcons. In 2007, twelve teams participated in the league: four teams each from Kentucky and Michigan, three from Ohio, and one from Indiana. In 2008, the Cleveland Lions took a pass and the Central Kentucky Studs were allowed to participate in the league.

They were later renamed as the Chargers, and were the sole team to be admitted for the 2008 season. After a year, however, they folded. The West Michigan Force, the Hardin County Wolverines, and the Kentucky/Ohio Xtreme left MCFL to join the United States Football Alliance.

  • Lou Groza: He’s an offensive tackle and place kicker for the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League and the All-America Football Conference. He played in twenty-one seasons and helped his team win eight league championships. He was invited to 9 Pro Bowls due to his great football skills.
  • Nick Mangold: He’s the center for the New York Jets in the National Football League, but used to play college football at Ohio State. His ability to lock and drive from a standstill position was commended by the New York Times. He’s also invited to 6 Pro Bowls and became NFL’s highest paid center when he was given a $55 million contract for 7 years with the Jets.
  • Charles Woodson: He’s the strong safety for the Oakland Raiders in the National Football League. He’s a 7-time Pro-Bowler who’s been named to the All-Pro team 6 times in his football career. At present, he’s the last player to win the Heisman trophy that’s not a quarterback or running back.

The NFL Upcoming Season

NFL logoThe 2015 NFL season is the National Football League’s 96th season. It started on September 10, with the annual kickoff game. The New England Patriots, which won the championships during the Super Bowl XLIX, played against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Patriots ended up winning with 28 – 21. This season will conclude NFL’s championship game on February 7, 2016, at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

In the International Series, the Miami Dolphins are scheduled to play against the New York Jets on October 4 while the Jacksonville Jaguars are scheduled to play against the Buffalo Bills on October 25. On November 1, the Kansas City Chiefs will play against the Detroit Lions. This is the second consecutive year that the Lions have joined the International Series. More games will be played on November 26, Thanksgiving Day, and December 25, Christmas day.

If you are curious as to who will be this season’s favorites, you’ll be glad to know that ESPN’s power rankings are out. The Seattle Seahawks has earned the crowd’s attention after finishing the season with 6 – 0. For the past 6 weeks, they’ve given up 6.5 points per game while only allowing touchdowns.

Next in line are the New England Patriots, the Green Bay Packers, the Denver Broncos, the Dallas Cowboys, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Detroit Lions, the Indianapolis Colts, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Arizona Cardinals. The New England Patriots have lost the number one slot to the Seahawks.

This is mainly because the Seahawks have the best overall record amongst the teams in the postseason, finishing with 5 – 1 against the teams that qualified for the playoffs. They won against the Denver Broncos, the Green Bay Packers, and the Carolina Panthers. They even won against the Arizona Cardinals twice. Their sole loss was against the Dallas Cowboys.

Predicting what will happen in the NFL season is much harder than predicting what will happen in other American sports. Most of the time, it is about recognizing the fact that some teams are limited by certain aspects. For instance, it is virtually impossible to win without a good quarterback. Even if the rest of the team does their best, they may still not win if they do not have the best person for the most important position in the game.

With this being said, the teams expected to be in this season’s bottom 8 include the Buffalo Bills, the Cleveland Browns, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets, the Oakland Raiders, the San Francisco 49ers, the Tennessee Titans, and Washington. There is a much higher likelihood that these teams will fail than their quarterbacks suddenly improving.

As for the teams that you may expect to decline in terms of performance level or record, these include the Arizona Cardinals, the Carolina Panthers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Detroit Lions, the Houston Texans, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the San Diego Chargers. They may still be competitive, but they may also be worse than they were the previous year.

On the other hand, the teams expected to improve this season include the Atlanta Falcons, the Chicago Bears, the Miami Dolphins, the Minnesota Vikings, the New Orleans Saints, the New York Giants, the St. Louis Rams, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ improvement may be minimal, but that still counts.

Those who are fans of the Eagles also think that they will win the NFC East and even the Super Bowl. So if you are a fan of the Cowboys who enjoy mocking the Eagles, you may want to consider that Kelly is still on the team.

Los Angeles is also getting two teams this season – St. Louis Rams and the Oakland Raiders. The Oakland Raiders are expected to do better than the San Francisco 49ers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to do well and make the playoffs.

As for the Detroit Lions and the Miami Dolphins, this may not be a good season for them. The Lions’ defense seems weak and the Dolphins just don’t seem good enough to make the cut. They may win for a while, but they are still expected to fold eventually. Oh, and Jameis Winston is expected to win a playoff game.
